The first thing to do when starting a project is to place columns at a determined distance on the page. This is important in getting the structure of the house right. There are two different types of columns that we can use in Revit. They are structural or architectural columns. The difference between the two are that architectural columns take on the material and elements of the surrounding walls, whereas structural columns can be more easily placed along grid points by using a pre-determined grid and the “at grid” tool. Left click and drag over the grid to allow it to add a column to each point where the vertical and horizontal grid lines intersect. Make sure to click finish to save if wanting to save the placement of the columns. Architectural columns are the more common of the two, however structural columns may be used where there are exposed columns that differ from the walls, or columns that stand alone.
